Latest Work - Photosynthetic Human
The rising air pollution levels have become especially alarming as they pose one of the major threats to the climate and the well-being of living creatures. Due to humanity’s great contribution to elevated carbon dioxide emissions, the Earth is approaching climate extremes and loss of biodiversity. Being the cause of the problem, it is our responsibility to solve it. One solution could be to use algae in a synthetic ecosystem to turn human bodies into air purification factories.

Meet the Masters - Hito Steyerl
During the monthly event Meet the Masters at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam Iza Awad was invited to give insights in the work of renowned visual artist and filmmaker Hito Steyerl and compare her vision to his own work. A live performance was given on the latest work ‘Photosynthetic Human’ with dancer Jordan Achiano. Hito’s work ‘power plants’ uses predictive algorithms to design flowers with unexpected powers that can be used for political, social and ecological resistance. The visual artist uses her work as critical reflection and gives people outside the status quo powers which make them resilient against autocrats. Awad’s work greatly matches the vision of Hito, providing photosynthetic active clothing and skin applicants with algae and plants to empower the ‘status quo’ by giving them powers to produce and share clean air. Ultimately, creating autonomous human beings.
